What an index actually measures

An index is a rule for combining a set of share prices into a single number. Change the rule or the set, and the number changes meaning.

  • KSE-100 — the exchange's headline index, covering 100 companies chosen under the exchange's published methodology.
  • KSE-30 — a narrower set, so a single large constituent moves it more.
  • KSE All Share — the broadest view of listed companies.
  • KMI-30 and PSX-KMI All Shares — restricted to companies meeting Shariah screening criteria.
  • Sectoral indices such as BKTi and OGTi — banks and oil & gas respectively, useful for seeing whether a move was market-wide or confined to one sector.

Index constituents are reviewed and re-composed by the exchange from time to time. Those changes are published as exchange notices — see Company Announcements.

Indices cannot be bought directly. They are a measure, not an investment.
